“This year the Junior League of Buffalo will celebrate its centennial anniversary. For 100 years JLB has been fulfilling its mission to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women, and improve the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. While the focus of JLB’s community efforts may have changed over time, the commitment and dedication of members to these projects has remained unwavering.

In the upcoming year, we will be looking back and reflect on the impact we have made on the community over the past 100 years. During this time, as we focus on our external efforts, I would like us to not forget the impact being a part of JLB has had on our members. Take a moment to reflect on the impact being in JLB has had upon you. Who have you met during your time in JLB, that you would not have gotten to know otherwise? I have met some of the most amazing women that reside in WNY. When Business First 30 under 30 and 40 under 40 lists come out, you can be sure to find a Junior Leaguer or two on the list. These women are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and get dirty to transform a space for a group in need. They are just as comfortable taking the lead as a board member of a non-profit, or even impacting the community in their day-to-day work. Through JLB I have met many women who have become good friends, I even met my best friend and travel buddy during our provisional year.

What have you learned during your time in JLB? General meetings constantly take us to new locations throughout the city, and important lessons are learned from the guest speakers. Through our placements, we have the opportunity to learn new skills and try new things. To not to shy away from things outside of our comfort zones, that may be why a few of you are here at Toastmasters tonight.

So raise your glass, and join me in celebrating 100 years of Junior League, not only making an impact on our community, but also a lasting impact on all of us.”
